The IMO (International Maritime Organization) is under pressure from multiple sides as to a tougher enforcement on sulphur emmission from bunker oil.
BIMCO, Clean Shipping Coalition, Cruise Lines International Association, Friends of the Earth, International Chamber of Shipping, International Parcel Tankers’ Association, INTERTANKO, Pacific Environment, World Shipping Council, and WWF Global Arctic Programme are all appealing to IMO for action.
Shipping lines not following the rules would be saving a lot of money, and having an unfair competitive edge.
The legal limit for ships without the proper scrubbing equipment is 0.5% sulphur content.
The new rules for suplhur emmission is set to go into force on 1 january 2020.
