Despite large protests from environmental groups, permissions for the expansions of the Rive Elbe are almost in place. The permission delays have cost the Port of Hamburg its number one place among European commercial ports
Making the Port of Hamburg more competitive
The plan is to deepen the Elbe passage from the current 12.5 meters to 14.5 meter river depth. This will enable mega vessels (23,000+ TEU) to call at Hamburg.
The expansion is estimated to take 2 years to complete and will cost around 200 mio. EUR.
The final hurdle
The third amendment to the expansion plan may still be legally challenged. A appeal must be brought before the Federal Administrative Court.
